“The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words” . . . Elliott Erwitt

Elliott Erwitt is a French-born photographer who is known for his uncanny ability to capture the humour and irony of everyday life.

The recent proliferation of photos in social media during this pandemic has compelled me to start a project consisting of a series of blogposts, each one with a quote made famous by a world-renowned photographer.  There will be no technical jargon or equipment reviews.  My intent is to make the reader aware of some witty, down-to-earth quotes that relate to how and why we “take pictures”.

Cameras . . . They are everywhere!

Smartphone, Point-and-Shoot, SLR, DSLR, Go-Pro, Video, Mirrorless, etc.

Then there are these makers of cameras: Canon, Fujifilm, Hasselblad, Konica, Lumix, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Sony, Yashika, etc.

If I have forgotten any, it is not intentional.

“Are we taking pictures, or, are we making photographs?”

With all the different types of cameras around and all the different camera manufacturers, there are so many more holders of these instruments of creation. This begs the question . . .

There is nothing wrong with taking lots of pictures, or ‘snapshots’. Some will even be postcard-worthy! I must admit that there are times when I will put one of my cameras in AUTO-mode and snap away . . . Just because!

You will perhaps not have heard of all the photographers I highlight. It seems that we all like, or need to, document these days!  The ease with which we can use social media allows us to show the world.  Some photographs are snapshots and some are way over processed, yet they all tell a story.

I hope you find my series informative and helpful, whether you take pictures or make photographs. Each post will be short . . . just a saying and a little bit about who said it.

After reading each post on photorichard.ca, I encourage you to leave me some comments . . .

  • Was the quote interesting to you?
  • Are you interested in learning more about your camera?
  • Would you be interested in a photowalk or road trip close to your vicinity to make photographs?

Happy shooting from “Your Lens . . . Near and Far”.
